Turkey’s president reiterated on Wednesday that he was ready to host the leaders of Russia and Ukraine to “pave the way for the re-establishment of peace” as tensions between the two countries showed few signs of abating. In a television interview, Recep Tayyip Erdogan said: “Turkey wants tensions between Russia and Ukraine to be resolved before they turn into a new crisis.I hope Russia will not resort to armed attacks and occupation of Ukraine, such a move cannot be rational for Russia and the region.Turkey wants peace and stability in the region.”Erdogan also announced that he had invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to visit Turkey, though no date has been set.At the same time, he reiterated Turkey’s “unequivocal” commitment to Ukraine’s territorial integrity.Russia has recently massed tens of thousands of troops near Ukraine’s eastern border, prompting fears that the Kremlin may be planning another military offensive against its former Soviet neighbour.Moscow denies it is preparing for an invasion and says its forces are there conducting exercises. It also issued a list of security demands, including that Ukraine not join NATO.
